Rock Werchter was first held in 1974. Right from the start, the festival did what it does best: booking the biggest and most popular acts of the moment. Now, Rock Werchter is one of the biggest festivals in the world and should definitely have a (high) place on your festival bucketlist.
Apart from surprising with the most superb lineups, the Belgian festival also has a great vibe. The crowd includes people of all ages, but everyone has one thing in common: they come to Werchter to have a great time. And that great time is guaranteed at Rock Werchter. With a delicious choice of food (with lots of vegetarian and vegan options) and drinks (Belgian beer is the best!), there’s really nothing missing here.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I get to the festival?
Rock Werchter encourages you to take public transport to the festival. A festival ticket gives you one free train ticket for a return journey in second class from any Belgian train station to Leuven station. You will have to ‘buy’ this train ticket in advance, through the website of NMBS.
If you’re coming from abroad, you are probably first traveling to Brussels, either by plane (BRU) or train. Trains from Brussels to Leuven run very frequently: around every 15 minutes. The journey is approximately half an hour. From there, there are free shuttle buses to the festival site of Werchter (just follow the signs – or the crowd).
If you’re coming by car, there are parkings all around Werchter. Just navigate to the Belgian town and start following the signs once you see them. There are three parking zones (A, B and C), that are all at approximately the same distance from the campsite and festival site (a 30-minute walk).
Is there a festival campsite?
Sure! There is an official festival campsite called ‘The Hive‘ and a few other campings that are a bit further away and more quiet. The Hive opens at 14:00 on Wednesday, the other campsites at 8:00 on Thursday. You have to buy a separate camping ticket on the Rock Werchter website.
If you would rather not camp, you can find a hotel or B&B in the nearby city of Leuven. There are free shuttle buses from Leuven station to the Werchter festival site, which run all day long. They stop when there are no more people waiting in the queue.
