The best of 2019: Mad Cool Festival

2019 was a great year for music festivals, with many interesting acts touring in Europe this summer. Today, we take a look at 5 artists that made Mad Cool and 2019 memorable, starting with Noel Gallagher.

Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds

Every year, it’s the same question: will Oasis reunite? Fans speculate, bookers take bets and producers pray for it, but it does not happen. August marked the 10th anniversary of the breakup. But it’s still possible to hear some Oasis songs live: by going to a concert of Noel or Liam Gallagher. Noel also has solo records with his new band, and they are quality. At Mad Cool, he played a good mix of both, closing the set with a Beatles cover.

The Cat Empire

The Cat Empire played at the welcome party of the festival. Party is the word to emphasize here, as the Australian band is one of the best in making people sing and dance, a la Crystal Fighters. They are less famous but always deliver, isn’t that what we all want, a great live band? The band doesn’t stick to a genre, taking inspiration from rock, latin music, reggae and more.

Rone

On a more electronic vibe, but still a lesser known act: Rone. The “French Prodigy” has some hits like ‘Bye Bye Macadam’, but his live sets aren’t only that: he knows how to go up, down and drop. Some other songs like ‘Parade’ take you to a parallel universe and goes right to your heart. He played late at night right after Jon Hopkins and Bonobo, which is a great electro combo to close the festival with.

Charlotte de Witte

Also on the electronic side of the festival (Mad Cool really upped their game this year): Charlotte de Witte. The Belgian electro producer is getting bigger and bigger, while her sets are getting better and better. She is almost a household name in the genre now. Charlotte started her carreer as “Raving George” to hold the fact that she is a woman, but we are glad that she can be 100% herself now and make great music. She closed the Loop Stage on the Thursday at Mad Cool, opposite The Chemical Brothers.

Mogwai

One of the best post-rock bands in the world: Mogwai. And here we see where lies the music diversity of Mad Cool, after all these bands and all these genres. The Scottish band performed on Thursday and delivered a great performance. This year, they also played at Rock Werchter, NOS Alive and more. Hopefully, they will tour again next year with a new album.
